Chapter 13

Lirana.

The name that had been erased from the Jorathian vocabulary centuries previously. The name that like no other stood for treachery and weakness of character. The name whose utterance had ever since been strictly forbidden.

Until now.

Taking advantage of Ahren’s momentary paralysis, Falk shoved him aside as the old man raised his blade. Immediately, the younger Forest Guardian threw himself at his erstwhile master, the two of them crashing to the floor in a confusion of arms and legs.

‘Let…go…of…me!’ groaned Falk, trying to free himself from his former protégé.

‘Hakanu! Lyssin!’ grunted Ahren through gritted teeth. ‘Help me stop this madness!’

The two young Paladins, who, like him, were untouched by the centuries of resentment that afflicted their fellow Champions of the gods, leapt to Culhen’s assistance, immediately doing their level best to stop their brothers and sisters in their furious attack, the skirmish ebbing and flowing in what amounted to a temporary stalemate before the stoically standing Woman in Black.

Lirana, thought Ahren, flabbergasted. This woman is really the legendary Lirana.

I have an idea, interjected Culhen, knocking over the knife wielding Fisker before the blonde Paladin had the chance to drive his weapon forward.

Quickly getting to his feet, Ahren positioned himself before Lirana, his Wind Blade pointing forward in a low, defensive position.

‘Stop this madness!’ he shouted, glaring at the First, who was intent on fighting his way past Culhen.

‘Never!’ snarled the age-old Paladin, spitting out the word. ‘She got away from us during the Night of Blood and was never seen again. We all took a vow that we would make her pay for her heinous crime!’

Ahren heard a snort of bitterness from behind. ‘As if I have not paid a hundred times over for what the Dark god made me do.’

The First was about to make another effort at shoving his way past Culhen when Ahren exploded with rage, abandoning any inhibitions he might have felt.

‘THAT’S ENOUGH!’ he yelled, the ferocity in his voice causing his own ears to ring, and the guards outside to push the doors open in horror.

Ahren pointed at the unfortunate sentries before screaming: ‘CLOSE THOSE DOORS!’ In the blink of an eye, the council members were left alone again.

‘WE ARE PALADINS!’ he bellowed furiously. ‘NOT MURDERERS!’

Falk retreated a step from his erstwhile apprentice and sheathed his weapon. ‘You are right – we are not murderers. But she is.’

‘I see,’ murmured the Woman in Black – Lirana. ‘So, all those rumours that I heard were untrue – that Aluna and Fisker spent years as pirates on the Cutlass Sea, creating bloody havoc? Or that the Blue Cohorts hired themselves out to bored nobility, involving
